Art B.R.U.T
An Exhibition by SLART
‘Art B.R.U.T’ is all about showcasing the raw, unfiltered creativity of self-taught artists from Swindon and surrounding areas. Inspired by Jean Dubuffet’s idea of ‘Art Brut’ (Raw Art), this exhibition is packed with bold, expressive pieces that break away from the usual rules of art. There’s no formal training here, just pure, unrestrained creativity.
Expect a mix of painting, sculpture and digital art with audio descriptions that immerse you into the creative process. This isn’t just an exhibition—it’s an invitation to challenge what you think art is and reconnect with that spark of creativity we all have inside.
Art B.R.U.T is a celebration of artistic freedom, showcasing a diverse range of voices and styles while adding something fresh and exciting to Swindon’s cultural scene.
Examples
Think raw, expressive, unpolished, messy, naive, childlike—works that feel instinctive and alive. Figurative and abstract pieces are both welcome, especially those that embrace imperfection, spontaneity, and unfiltered emotion. The main idea is that you enjoyed its creation!
SLART
A bit about your curator
I’m SLART (Steven Light), an outsider artist and figurative expressionist exploring personal stories, universal struggles, resilience, and nostalgia.
After my art teacher discouraged me at 17, I dropped out of his class. Hindered by massive self-doubt and social anxiety, I focused on building websites as a career instead. In 2019, a blog post rekindled my childhood passion for drawing, offering an outlet I needed during a second bout of kidney failure in 2021. Now, I balance a day job with an emerging art career, averaging five exhibitions annually and now preparing for my major solo show, Memento Vivere, in London in September 2025.
My style is instinctive, naïve, and raw, shaped by Art Brut influences (Dubuffet), humour and absurdity (Shrigley), and community spirit (Haring). My work reflects the imperfect truths of life, capturing both struggle and resilience with honesty and a sense of nostalgia that speaks to universal human experiences.
